Tennessee baseball received a transfer commitment on Thursday. Rice freshman two-way player Blaine Brown announced his commitment to the Vols.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound two-way player appeared in 54 games, including 54 starts, for the Owls in 2025. He recorded 10 home runs, 38 RBIs, 34 runs, 61 hits, 12 doubles, 21 walks and five stolen bases.

Brown was the first freshman to lead Rice for batting average since Anthony Rendon in 2009.

Seven appearances for him were as a pitcher in 2025. Brown (0-1) made four starts and totaled six strikeouts and a 20.77 ERA. He allowed 12 walks, 13 runs (10 earned) and nine hits in 4.1 innings.

He earned All-AAC first team honors as a designated hitter and was an unanimous selection by AAC coaches to an all-freshman team. Brown led Rice in batting average (.292), slugging percentage (.493), hits (61), RBIs (38), doubles (12), home runs (10), total bases (103) and multi-hit games (18) in 2025.

He is from Shadow Creek High School in Pearland, Texas.

UN climate chief Simon Stiell urged countries on Thursday to accelerate negotiations ahead of the COP30 in Brazil, as there was a lot left to be done.

Speaking after two weeks of technical talks in Bonn, Stiell closed the annual climate diplomacy event saying: “We need to go further, faster and fairer.”

Bonn is home to the UN Climate Change Secretariat, which coordinates international climate policy and hosts preparatory talks each year ahead of climate summits.

“I’m not going to sugar coat … we have a lot more to do before we meet again in Belem,” he said.

COP30 is due to be held on November 10-21 in the Amazonian city, which is the capital of Para state.

At last year’s UN COP29 summit in Azerbaijan, rich nations agreed to increase climate finance to $300 billion a year by 2035, an amount decried as woefully inadequate.

Azerbaijan and Brazil, which is hosting this year’s COP30 conference, have launched an initiative to reduce the shortfall, with the expectation of “significant” contributions from international lenders.

This year’s COP (Conference of the Parties) comes as average global temperatures in the past two years have exceeded the 1.5° Celsius benchmark set under the Paris climate accord a decade ago.

“There is so much more work to do to keep 1.5°C alive, as science demands. We must find a way to get to the hard decisions sooner,” Stiell said.

Under the Paris Agreement, wealthy developed countries — those most responsible for global warming to date — are obliged to pay climate finance to poorer nations.

Other countries, most notably China, make voluntary contributions.

A day after having to leave the biggest game of his life, Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton shared his first public comments since tearing his right Achilles tendon early in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

"Words cannot express the pain of this letdown," Haliburton wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after undergoing surgery Monday to repair the tendon. "The frustration is unfathomable. I’ve worked my whole life to get to this moment and this is how it ends? Makes no sense."

But for the majority of his five-paragraph post, which Haliburton accompanied with a photo of himself smiling and forming a heart with his hands from a hospital bed, the two-time All Star also delivered a message of optimism and determination. And he did so, in part, by quoting late Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who overcame the same injury in 2013.

"I think Kobe said it best when in this same situation," Haliburton wrote. “'There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever.'

"And that’s exactly right. I will do everything in my power to get back right."

Bryant's words were part of a lengthy Facebook post early in the morning on April 13, 2013, hours after tearing his left Achilles tendon while driving to the basket during a game against the Golden State Warriors the previous night. After suffering the injury, Bryant famously stayed in the game long enough to sink two free throws.

In his post, Bryant describes his raw emotions and even uncharacteristically expresses some self-doubt before his famous Mamba Mentality inevitably surfaces.

"All the training and sacrifice just flew out the window with one step that I've done millions of times!" wrote Bryant, who was 34 at the time. "The frustration is unbearable. The anger is rage. Why the hell did this happen ?!? Makes no damn sense. Now I'm supposed to come back from this and be the same player Or better at 35?!? How in the world am I supposed to do that??

"I have NO CLUE. Do I have the consistent will to overcome this thing? Maybe I should break out the rocking chair and reminisce on the career that was. Maybe this is how my book ends. Maybe Father Time has defeated me...Then again maybe not!

"Its 3:30am, my foot feels like dead weight, my head is spinning from the pain meds and Im wide awake. Forgive my Venting but whats the purpose of social media if I wont bring it to you Real No Image?? Feels good to vent, let it out. To feel as if THIS is the WORST thing EVER! Because After ALL the venting, a real perspective sets in."

That's where Bryant writes the words that Haliburton quoted.

"We don't quit, we don't cower, we don't run," Bryant wrote later in the post. "We endure and conquer."

True to his word, Bryant returned to the floor with the Lakers on Dec. 8, 2013. He dealt with several other injuries — including a knee injury that ended his 2013-14 season just six games after he returned from the Achilles — before retiring at the end of the 2015-16 season, his 20th in the NBA.

More than a decade later, a 25-year-old star is using Bryant's words as inspiration, days after being unable to help his team in a 103-91 loss to the Thunder with the NBA championship on the line.

Here is Haliburton's full post:

"Man. Don’t know how to explain it other than shock. Words cannot express the pain of this letdown. The frustration is unfathomable. I’ve worked my whole life to get to this moment and this is how it ends? Makes no sense.

"Now that I’ve gotten surgery, I wish I could count the number of times people will tell me I’m going to 'come back stronger'. What a cliche lol, this s— sucks. My foot feels like dead weight fam. But what’s hurting most I think is my mind. Feel like I’m rambling, but I know this is something I’ll look back on when I’m through this, as something I’m proud I fought through. It feels good to let this s— out without y’all seeing the kid ugly cry.

"At 25, I’ve already learned that God never gives us more than we can handle. I know I’ll come out on the other side of this a better man and a better player. And honestly, right now, torn Achilles and all, I don’t regret it. I’d do it again, and again after that, to fight for this city and my brothers. For the chance to do something special.

"Indy, I’m sorry. If any fan base doesn’t deserve this, it’s y’all. But together we are going to fight like hell to get back to this very spot, and get over this hurdle. I don’t doubt for a second that y’all have my back, and I hope you guys know that I have yours. I think Kobe said it best when in this same situation. 'There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever.' And that’s exactly right. I will do everything in my power to get back right.

"My journey to get to where I am today wasn’t by happenstance, I’ve pushed myself every day to be great. And I will continue to do just that. The most important part of this all, is that I’m grateful. I’m grateful for every single experience that’s led me here. I’m grateful for all the love from the hoop world. I don’t 'have to' go through this, I get to go through this. I’m grateful for the road that lies ahead. Watch how I come back from this. So, give me some time, I’ll dust myself off and get right back to being the best version of Tyrese Haliburton.

"Proverbs 3:5-6 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.'"

In 2013, then-Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak was entering his final season as the Titans' head coach. Desperate to draft well and put together a playoff-worthy team, the Titans selected offensive lineman Chance Warmack out of Alabama with the 10th overall pick. However, in PFF's latest re-draft, they suggest the Titans would have selected center Travis Frederick out of Wisconsin instead of Warmack if they had known how each player would turn out.

In going through each player's history, there's no reason to believe that this wouldn't have been a better selection. Frederick's career was cut short, but the Titans could have used him at center in 2013. That year, Rob Turner began the season as the starting center but was replaced with fourth-round rookie Brian Schwenke later in the season. If the Titans had selected Frederick, he would have brought that first year of starting games to Tennessee, and the offensive line would have been improved.

Warmack was supposed to be a long-term part of the Titans' offensive line, but the team switched him from the left side, where he played in college, to the right side, and the result wasn't great. They ended up declining his fifth-year option, and he departed the organization when his rookie contract expired.

Giants Quarterback Teases Reality TV Show Appearance originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Tommy DeVito became the lone remnant in the New York Giants' quarterback room after some major changes over the last few months. It started midseason when the team released former top-10 pick Daniel Jones, signaling a sharp turn in a new direction.

Since then, the Giants added Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson through free agency and acquired a second first-round pick in the NFL Draft to select Jaxson Dart. That sequence of events guarantees a new starter for next season but spells some concern for what DeVito's future looks like.

Regardless of how the depth chart shakes out not much will change with regard to the perception of this fan favorite. Giants supporters have gravitated toward the young quarterback and he gave them another reason last week.

Amid the surging popularity of the hit reality TV series "Love Island" DeVito joked that he and the buzzing rookie Dart have a desire to make an appearance on the show.

"Me and Jaxson might go on 'Love Island,'" Tommy DeVito told reporters. "We've talked about it so we really don't know what's about to happen."

"I can't say we [watch] it every night," DeVito added. "But from time to time, if we get an off day, we watch it and talk about it."

An unexpected bonding activity brought a few laughs from reporters and DeVito himself. Reality TV interests aside from the pair of handsome young play callers, Dart's prospects are soaring.

"He's done excellent picking up information," head coach Brian Daboll said.

"He's smart, aggressive with the football, which I like. And then the true test will be once we start with live hitting and preseason games and things like that. He's progressed since he's been here...He's made improvement."

The Giants will hope those improvements translate to the field once the preseason gets going. The next steps in the process come in a month when the Giants report to training camp on July 22.

Anthony Richardson offered a positive update on his sore shoulder.

The Colts quarterback said over the weekend that he is ready to participate in the start of training camp.

The team reports July 22.

"I’m all good," Richardson told Zach Goodall of 247 Sports while at community events in Gainesville, Florida. "Not really even a bump in the road. I feel like I tripped. I fell. Just got back up and hit the ground running again."

Earlier this month, Colts coach Shane Steichen would not provide a firm timetable for Richardson's return after the quarterback's right shoulder kept him sidelined for organized team activities and the mandatory minicamp.

Richardson underwent surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder his rookie season. He experienced soreness in the throwing shoulder during the offseason program and traveled to Los Angeles to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed Richardson's surgery in 2023.

Rest was prescribed for Richardson's recovery.

Richardson, the fourth overall pick in 2023, is competing with Daniel Jones for the starting job.

Ralf Rangnick Slams Manchester United Over ‘Leaderhship Problem’
Ralf Rangnick Slams Manchester United Over ‘Leaderhship Problem’

Ralf Rangnick’s Leadership Warning Still Echoes at Manchester United

It has been more than two years since Ralf Rangnick left Manchester United, but the former interim manager’s words continue to resonate. As the Red Devils attempt to build a new era under Ruben Amorim, Rangnick’s scathing analysis of his short stint at the club highlights long-standing issues that still loom large.

“I think we have to go back to 2013, when Sir Alex left the club,” Rangnick recently told Sport. “And at the time he was still there, he was the mastermind behind it all. He probably also brought a lot of important people to the club. And the moment he left, some of those people probably left the club as well. And, since then, I think they have a leadership problem.”

It is not the first time Rangnick has spoken about dysfunction at the club. During his tenure in the 2021–22 season, he described the problems at Manchester United as requiring “open heart surgery.” Since then, the decline has become more pronounced, with United finishing a dismal 15th in the Premier League last season.

Photo IMAGO

Lack of Clarity and Control Behind the Scenes

One of Rangnick’s key frustrations was the opaque chain of command at Old Trafford. “Who’s really making the decisions and why are they making them? Are they really the best people for the job?” he asked. “I can only tell you that the six months I was there, it was difficult to say, even for me as head coach. Who were the decision-makers? Who? Who could I talk to? If we wanted to sign new players, it was difficult. There were people, but in the end, it was difficult.”

Such ambiguity points to systemic flaws in the club’s hierarchy. It is no surprise, then, that transfer strategies have often seemed muddled and reactionary.

Strategic Missteps in the Transfer Market

Rangnick also questioned the club’s approach to player recruitment. Following a humbling loss to Liverpool in 2022, he famously said United were “six years behind” their rivals. That gap appears no closer to being closed, as poor investment continues to plague the club.

“If I were the owner or sporting director of a club, I would only try to sign and invest in young players,” Rangnick explained. “Because no matter how you look at it, it only makes sense. Does it make sense to spend £30, 40, 50 million on a 28 or 30-year-old signing? Not really.”

He offered a stark financial breakdown: “Let’s calculate it. You sign a 28 or 30-year-old with a five-year contract. You spend £50m more on the transfer fee, an average of £15m per year multiplied by five. That’s £65m plus the £50m transfer fee equals £115m, plus the agents’ fees. The whole operation costs you around £130m.”

Georgia Makes Extremely Early Push for Playmaker originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

It's never too early to make an offer on the recruiting trail, especially for a legacy player.

Tight end Asa Wall just finished his freshman year of high school. But On3's Jeremy Johnson reported Saturday that while participating in a 7-on-7 tournament in Athens, Georgia, the Georgia Bulldogs made an offer to the tight end.

Wall's father, J.T. Wall, played fullback for the Bulldogs from 2001-02.

“I’ve always been very interested in Georgia,” Wall told Johnson. “Growing up in Georgia, it’s hard not to be a fan…I have grown up listening to stories about when my dad played for Georgia.”

Wall also described how he received the offer from the Bulldogs.

“Coach Smart offered me between games at the 7 on 7, and I was grateful and excited, but I had to get back focused on the next game and compete with my teammates."

Georgia Bulldogs football head coach Kirby Smart© Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

Wall's father may have gotten the tight end's foot in the door at Georgia. But Wall stressed that he will have to earn the rest of what his career could entail with the Bulldogs.

“They make you work for what you get, and it is not given,” said Wall, who added that he is already developing a relationship with Bulldogs tight end coach Todd Hartley.

If Wall committed to the Bulldogs, he would be the program's first prospect in the 2028 class. However, it's very early in the recruitment process for that class.

Recruiting websites don't even have their rankings out yet on players who will be entering their sophomore high school seasons this fall.

In his two seasons, J.T. Wall ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns with the Bulldogs. He also caught 11 passes for 105 yards and two additional scores.

Paul Pogba to sign two-year deal with AS Monaco

France international midfielder Paul Pogba (32) will sign a two-year deal with Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, according to reports from Le Parisien and Foot MercatoThe 32-year-old World Cup winner with France will play in Ligue 1 for the first time, after spending most of his professional career with Juventus and Manchester United.

Pogba was a free agent following his contract termination with Juventus last year. The Le Havre Academy product hasn’t featured in a professional game since September 2023. A couple of days later, Pogba tested positive during a routine anti-doping test. He was handed a four-year ban, which was then reduced to eighteen months.

Pogba was offered to AS Monaco at the start of the month. Le Parisien understands that the France international midfielder made financial sacrifices to reach an agreement in principle with Les Monégasques. At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Mar Elias Church in the Dweila neighbourhood of the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, health authorities and security sources said.

It was the first suicide bombing in Damascus since Bashar al-Assad was toppled by an Islamist-led rebel insurgency in December.

Syria’s interior ministry said the suicide bomber was a member of Islamic State. “He entered the church, opened fire and then detonated his explosive vest,” a ministry statement added.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two men were involved in the attack, including the one who blew himself up.

Islamic State has been behind several attempted attacks on churches in Syria since Assad’s fall, but this was the first to succeed, another security source told Reuters.

Syria’s state news agency cited the health ministry as saying that 52 people were also injured in the blast.

A livestream from the site by Syria’s civil defence, the White Helmets, showed scenes of destruction from inside the church, including a bloodied floor and shattered pews and masonry.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the offensive against Assad before taking over in January for a transitional phase, has repeatedly said he will protect minorities.

“We unequivocally condemn the abhorrent terrorist suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, Syria,” the Greek foreign ministry said in a statement.

“We demand that the Syrian transitional authorities take immediate action to hold those involved accountable and implement measures to guarantee the safety of Christian communities and all religious groups, allowing them to live without fear.”

Islamic State had previously targeted religious minorities, including a major attack on Shia pilgrims in Sayeda Zainab in 2016 — one of the most notorious bombings during Assad’s rule.

The latest assault underscores the group’s continued ability to exploit security gaps despite the collapse of its territorial control and years of counterterrorism efforts.

At least eight people were killed on Saturday when a hot air balloon with 21 passengers caught fire in southern Brazil, said the governor of Santa Catarina state, where the incident occurred.

“Eight fatalities and 13 survivors,” Governor Jorginho Mello said on X.

Videos taken by bystanders and carried on Brazilian television showed the moment when the balloon erupted in flames above the coastal town of Praia Grande. The weather conditions were clear. The basket carrying the passengers plummeted dozens of meters to the ground in flames.

“We still have no information” about the condition of the survivors, a spokeswoman for Santa Catarina firefighters told AFP.

Praia Grande, on the Atlantic coast, is a popular destination for hot-air ballooning in Brazil.

The survivors were being treated in area hospitals, firefighters said. An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident.

“I want to express my solidarity with the families of the victims,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a statement.

The pilot told officials that the fire was sparked by a blowtorch in the basket, Tiago Luiz Lemos, a police official in Praia Grande, told local media.

The pilot tried to bring the balloon down as soon as the fire erupted, “and once it was close to the ground, he told the passengers to jump from the basket. But some of them couldn’t do it and the fire grew,” the official said.

One witness told the Razao newspaper that he saw “two people falling, they were on fire, the basket broke off and the balloon fell”.

It was the second fatal balloon accident in the country in just a few days. Less than a week ago, a woman died during a ride in southeastern Sao Paulo state.

Dan Orlovsky may not have been the quarterback he had hoped to be in the NFL, but he has more than made up for it as an analyst and in how he now teaches the game to others. The former UConn quarterback now works out of the same state he played college football in as an analyst for ESPN.

As one of their lead football analysts, Orlovsky has the chance to talk about anyone and any team in the league. However, he has remained steadfast in his optimism about the Minnesota Vikings and J.J. McCarthy.

While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, Orlovsky displayed a trademark smile when asked if he was still high on J.J. McCarthy heading into the 2025 season and training camp.

The former NFL quarterback said, "I think he's gonna be awesome this year, honestly. I totally believe, production-wise, he'll play very similar to what Sam did last year. One, there's just a scheme and a roster talent — Minnesota's the easiest place in the NFL to play quarterback this year. It's as good an offensive roster as we have in the NFL. And then you combine it with scheme and play caller in Kevin O'Connell. . .I think J.J., the skills that he has and the foundation that he has, he's a play on rhythm, listen to his feet when it comes to where and when to throw the football, the timing of the way he plays the position. . .perfect for what is the necessary stuff playing that position in Minnesota."

Beyond just the coaching and atmosphere of the Vikings, the roster isn't half bad either. The work of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and his staff this offseason has McCarthy stepping into the best situation of a first-time starter in the recent history of the NFL.

With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Indianapolis Colts' 91-man roster.

Going alphabetically, up next is cornerback JuJu Brents.

JuJu Brents' profile

  • Height: 6-3
  • Weight: 198
  • Age: 25
  • NFL experience: 2 seasons
  • College: Kansas State
  • No. 29

2024 Snap count totals

  • Defense: 68
  • Special teams: 5

2024 PFF grades

  • Defense: 55.6
  • Special teams: 60.1

2024 Season Review

After appearing in only nine regular season games during his rookie season in 2023, Brents, unfortunately, dealt with another injury for much of the 2024 season.

An MCL injury that Brents sustained in the Colts' season opener last year against Houston landed him on injured reserve until Week 18, Indianapolis' regular season finale against Jacksonville. A groin injury in that game would then limit Brents to only six defensive snaps.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season

Brents, along with Jaylon Jones, Justin Walley, and potentially others, will be competing for the starting outside cornerback position opposite of Charvarius Ward. While there will be a starter on paper, I do think that we could see some mixing and matching here from Lou Anarumo, depending upon who the opponent is and what the matchup dictates.

This is going to be a more aggressive Colts' defense in this new scheme, and it's a play style that Brents believes suits his skill set quite well. However, the big thing for Brents, as Shane Steichen said, is staying healthy and on the football field.

Although he is now entering his third NFL season, due to injuries, he's still a relatively inexperienced player in terms of in-game reps. So when it comes to earning playing time in this new-look defense, being on the practice field is vital.

"He's been good," Steichen said of Brents this offseason. "Sticky in coverage. Obviously, has been battling injuries through his career, so hopefully this is a clear slate for him, going into this season, into this training camp, and staying healthy is going to be the biggest thing for him."

“I’ve just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days (September 17, 2025),” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, putting off the ban for the third time.

A federal law requiring TikTok’s sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump’s January inauguration.

The Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media, has previously said he is fond of the video-sharing app.

“I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” Trump said in an NBC News interview in early May. “If it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension.”

TikTok on Thursday welcomed Trump’s decision.

“We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users,” said a statement issued by the platform.

Digital Cold War?

Trump said in May that a group of purchasers was ready to pay TikTok owner ByteDance “a lot of money” for the video-clip-sharing sensation’s US operations.

Trump has repeatedly downplayed the risks that TikTok is in danger, saying he remains confident of finding a buyer for the app’s US business.

The White House had announced on Monday that Trump would throw the wildly popular video-sharing app, which has almost two billion global users, another lifeline.

During this new grace period, the administration will work “to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure,” the administration said in a statement.

The president is “just not motivated to do anything about TikTok,” said independent analyst Rob Enderle. “Unless they get on his bad side, TikTok is probably going to be in pretty good shape.”

Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, but reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform after coming to believe it helped him win young voters’ support in the November election.

Motivated by national security fears and a belief in Washington that TikTok is controlled by the Chinese government, the ban took effect on January 19, one day before Trump’s inauguration, with ByteDance having made no attempt to find a suitor.

TikTok “has become a symbol of the US-China tech rivalry; a flashpoint in the new Cold War for digital control,” said Shweta Singh, an assistant professor of information systems at Warwick Business School in Britain.

The president announced an initial 75-day delay of the ban upon taking office. A second extension pushed the deadline to June 19. Now the deadline is September 17.

Tariff turmoil

Trump said in April that China would have agreed to a deal on the sale of TikTok if it were not for a dispute over his tariffs on Beijing.

ByteDance has confirmed talks with the US government, saying key matters needed to be resolved and that any deal would be “subject to approval under Chinese law.”

Possible solutions reportedly include seeing existing US investors in ByteDance roll over their stakes into a new independent global TikTok company.

Additional US investors, including Oracle and private equity firm Blackstone, would be brought on to reduce ByteDance’s share in the new TikTok.

Much of TikTok’s US activity is already housed on Oracle servers, and the company’s chairman, Larry Ellison, is a longtime Trump ally.

Uncertainty remains, particularly over what would happen to TikTok’s valuable algorithm.

“TikTok without its algorithm is like Harry Potter without his wand – it’s simply not as powerful,” said Forrester Principal Analyst Kelsey Chickering.

Despite the turmoil, TikTok has been continuing with business as usual.

The platform on Monday introduced a new “Symphony” suite of generative artificial intelligence tools for advertisers to turn words or photos into video snippets for the platform.

A brain-dead pregnant woman who was kept alive in the southern US state of Georgia due to local abortion restrictions has given birth, officials said, with the mother then removed from life support.

Adriana Smith had captivated attention across a country where access to abortion has changed radically since the Supreme Court overturned the federal right to terminate a pregnancy in June 2022.

“On Friday, June 13, 2025, her infant son, named Chance, was born prematurely at approximately 4:41 am via emergency Cesarean section,” three Democratic congresswomen said in a statement.

“Chance weighs about 1 pound, 13 ounces and is currently in the NICU,” the statement said, adding that Smith was removed from life support on Tuesday.

Smith, a registered nurse, was suffering serious headaches in February when she was nine weeks pregnant. An initial hospital visit ended with only a prescription for medication.

The next morning, when the then 30-year-old was taken to the hospital where she worked, doctors found multiple blood clots in her brain, and she was declared brain dead.

Georgia law bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy — one of the country’s so-called ‘heartbeat’ laws, referring to the approximate first detection of a fetal heartbeat.

As Smith was nine weeks along, doctors were hesitant to do anything that could contravene the law, according to her mother, April Newkirk.

“This decision should’ve been left to us,” she told local NBC broadcaster WXIA-TV in mid-May. “I’m not saying that we would have chosen to terminate her pregnancy, what I’m saying is: we should have had a choice,” Newkirk said.

In June 2022, the conservative-leaning Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 case that established federal protections for abortion access. Since then, more than 20 out of 50 states, including Georgia, have imposed strict limits on abortions, or even outright bans.

The three congresswomen — Nikema Williams, Ayanna Pressley and Sara Jacobs — are pushing for better protections of the rights of pregnant women, “particularly black women, who are disproportionately impacted by systemic medical neglect and restrictive anti-abortion laws.

“The lack of a formal legal opinion or prosecutorial guidance leaves families and doctors in limbo,” said the lawmakers, who have presented a congressional resolution on the issue.

The coalition government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Wednesday unveiled a Rs310.2 billion deficit-free budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, which was approved by the Legislative Assembly amid a boycott by the opposition.

Earlier today, the budget session was delayed by over two hours after five opposition members — four from the PTI and one from the Jammu Kashmir People’s Party (JKPP) — staged a sit-in at the entrance of the assembly hall, protesting what they described as the government’s attempt to “bulldoze the budget”.

Four to five cabinet members approached the opposition to convince them to end their protest and voice their concerns inside the hall, but they were told that verbal assurances aside, the government’s “ill-will” was evident from the agenda of the budget session.

The agenda stated that after the presentation of the revised budget for 2024-25 and the estimated budget for 2025-26, the finance minister would move a motion for suspension of Rules 127, 128, 129, and 131 of the Rules of Procedure of Assembly — all pertaining to the budget process.

According to Rule 129, the speaker shall fix at least four days for open debate on the budget, provided there is a gap of two days between its presentation and the start of the debate. The coalition government has presented and passed its two previous budgets in a single day by suspending these rules.

After the ministers returned in disappointment, Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar himself attempted to persuade the protesting legislators, but also failed to bring them around.

Later, treasury members made their way into the assembly hall by navigating the space on either side of the sofas occupied by opposition lawmakers, following which the Finance Minister Majid Khan was given the floor by the chair to present his budget speech.

But before the finance minister began his speech, he moved a resolution for suspension of rules, which was approved by the treasury benches with a majority vote.

“Budget is not just a statement of income and expenditures, but a summary of the just distribution of available resources, future planning and official priorities,” Majid Khan said.

“I am presenting a people-friendly as well as historic budget in terms of its volume, and I am sure its implementation will usher in an era of development, guaranteeing the progress and prosperity of the nation,” he added.

Majid informed the House that Rs 261.2bn for recurring expenditures would be met entirely from the AJK’s revenue receipts.

Giving details of these receipts, he said Rs67.477bn would be generated through income tax collection, Rs 17.522bn from other taxes, Rs25bn from internal receipts, Rs1bn from water-use charges and Rs1.2bn from capital receipts (loans and advances). A major chunk of income — Rs149bn — would come from the AJK’s share in federal taxes (variable grant).

Of the development budget, the finance minister informed that its volume was Rs49bn, including a foreign component of Rs1bn.

AJK’s development budget is provided by the federal government as a ‘development grant’.

In 2023-24, the federal government had committed Rs30bn for development work in AJK, but the coalition government had announced a Rs42bn development budget, claiming it would generate the remaining Rs12bn from its own resources.

However, by the close of 2023-24, the actual development budget stood at Rs25.835bn.

Similarly, while unveiling the 2024-25 budget, Majid had put the development budget portfolio at Rs44bn, but the revised figures presented today showed it had amounted to only Rs28bn.

Immediately, it remains unclear whether the next fiscal year’s estimated development budget will meet the same fate, or the AJK government will manage to obtain and utilise the full amount of Rs49bn.

The finance minister asserted that despite financial constraints, the government was striving to support its employees, and announced an increase in their pay and pensions “in accordance with what had been declared by the federal government”.

As he concluded his speech and was about to present the budgetary demands, PML-N regional president Shah Ghulam Qadir and the party’s senior leader Raja Farooq Haider took turns questioning the rationale behind the hasty passage of the budget.

“This House is supposed to hold a debate on each and every aspect of the budget. The parliament and all four provincial assemblies are discussing their budgets. I wonder what problem the government has with holding a debate … This is not a healthy tradition,” remarked Qadir.

Haider urged the government not to make a mockery of the system by using the “brute force of majority” in the House.

“There are no unusual circumstances, such as war, natural calamities or internal disturbances, that can justify this hastiness,” he said.

However, despite their objections, the finance minister proceeded to present the demands for grants, prompting the duo, along with their party colleague Chaudhry Ismail, to walk out of the hall in protest.

Three lawmakers from PML-N — a coalition partner — who do not hold any official position, walked out of the House after Finance Minister Majid concluded his budget speech and, despite their objection, proceeded with the immediate passage of the budget through suspension of rules.

The House approved all 32 and 23 demands for grants under the recurring and development budgets, respectively. The minister also presented the demands for grants under the revised budget for the current fiscal year, which were subsequently approved by the House.

After the AJK Finance Act 2025 was also referred to the relevant select committee, the chair adjourned the House until June 23.

A week earlier, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented the proposed budget for the FY2025-26 on the floor of the National Assembly.

On Tuesday, AJK cabinet approved the development and non-development budget FY2025–26, along with the Finance Bill 2025.

During the meeting, the finance secretary briefed the cabinet on the revised estimates for the current fiscal year and the proposed allocations for 2025–26, while the secretary of inland revenue presented details of the Finance Bill 2025.

Speaking on the occasion, AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq said a people-friendly budget was essential to address public grievances and promote inclusive development.

West Virginia defensive coordinator Zac Alley has inherited a defense that has undergone a lot of change from the one that took the field last season.

The Mountaineers had to add a significant number of players to the unit given the turnover from the coaching change and exodus during the spring.

So what exactly was Alley looking for when it came to identifying those newcomers?

“If we watch a transfer portal guy you can watch his highlights or you can go watch him play an entire game and you go watch him play an entire game and realize a guy like Fred Perry … every single play everything he’s got is going to come out of him,” Alley said on 3 Guys Before the Game.

Perry, who played for Alley during his first two years at Jacksonville State demonstrated exactly what he wants to see out of his players in terms of effort. And that is a key component for what makes transfer portal and high school options a fit for the West Virginia defense.

Speed also is critical because of the way that the game is now played in space makes it a necessity to find those options that can run.

“We need guys that can, that can athletically change direction and run in a way that they have a chance to be successful,” Alley said.

On top of the physical pieces to the equation, Alley also believes it's critical to get background information on every possible addition so he calls anybody and everybody that he can to get an idea on how those players are from a character perspective as well.

Because while the physical aspects are critical, the other components are just as key as well.

Then comes the aspect of their fit in the scheme and the program.

“When you get them in the room you can talk to them and I kind of lay out the vision for how we want to be and what we’re going to be both as a team then defensively,” he said. “And I want to see how they react to that.”

It takes a different type of football player to play under head coach Rich Rodriguez and he expects a high standard at all times. So Alley makes sure that players understand that so there’s no surprises.

“Those types of things where you can tell does this dude have that fire in them to be a guy that’s going to want to come in and freaking dominate? Or is he going to be just ‘I'm O.K. with being average?” Alley said.

A panel of government officials and health experts on Tuesday stressed the need for a science-based approach and comprehensive fiscal reforms in the food sector, as part of efforts to improve food safety and public health on World Food Safety Day.

The panel called “Science in Action and Fiscal Governance for Safe Food” was jointly organised by the Senate, Gallup Pakistan, Impact Research International, and Islamabad Food Authority in the federal capital, according to a press release.

“The event underscored the critical need for a science-led approach to food safety and called for urgent fiscal reforms, particularly in taxation policy to support the formal food sector,” the press release said.

Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan, Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, presided over the panel. According to the release, he stressed the urgent need to design and implement evidence-based policies that ensure access to safe, traceable food in line with international standards.

“Food safety and security are not just issues of today, they are challenges for the future. Our systems must evolve to guarantee compliance, traceability, and public trust,” he was quoted as saying.

Another panellist Rida Qazi, Advisor to the Senate on Special Initiatives, reiterated the message, the press release said. She was quoted as saying, “Safe food deserves to be called food. Food safety must begin at the farm and extend all the way to our dining tables.”

Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) Secretary Jamil Ahmed Qureshi urged the need for alignment between fiscal policies and health priorities. “We must incentivise formalisation of the food sector,” he was quoted as saying.

“[The] public welfare should be the priority and taxing safe packaged milk is counterproductive. Instead, our policies should reflect our national commitment to providing safe, nutritious food for all,” he further added, per the release.

A food industry expert addressed fiscal hurdles, highlighting the disconnect between policy and public health goals. “Our taxation framework should enable, not obstruct, the availability of safe food. Taxing the formal sector only pushes consumers toward unsafe, unregulated options and undermines food security,” he was quoted as saying.

Gallup Pakistan CEO Bilal Gillani said that true food security can only be achieved through the commitment and collaboration of a strategic triad: science, economy, and culture, the press release said.

“He explained that scientists must lead with data-driven research, economists must design budgets that support both providers and consumers of safe food, and a cultural shift must be fostered where the consumption of safe, nutritious food becomes a natural part of daily life.”

Hana Mehmood, another panellist, emphasised the role of science in policymaking, according to the press release.

She was quoted as saying, “Public health protection and consumer empowerment start with food safety and transparent nutritional information. Our decisions must be grounded in scientific evidence, not assumptions.”

The press release said that the consensus of the panel was that the formal food sector ensures “traceability, transparent nutritional labelling, and regular monitoring for microbial and chemical safety”.

Zubair Faisal Abbasi from Impact Research International said, “These products adhere to Codex Alimentarius standards and are regulated by national and provincial food safety authorities. Therefore, our fiscal governance must be structured to actively incentivise the formal and documented sector,” according to the press release.

It added, “One of the strongest messages of the day resonated clearly: ‘It’s not food if it’s not safe.’

“… Unfair taxation policies make this safer option less accessible to consumers. Experts from government, academia, and industry stressed that adopting equitable taxation aligned with global best practices will ensure fair access to safe nutrition and foster a healthier, more resilient nation.”

A federal judge said on Monday that she would issue a brief extension of an order temporarily blocking United States President Donald Trump’s plan to bar foreign nationals from entering the US to study at Harvard University while she decides whether to issue a longer-term injunction.

US District Judge Allison Burroughs, at the end of a hearing in Boston in Harvard’s legal challenge to the restrictions, extended to June 23 a temporary restraining order that had been set to expire on Thursday. She said she wanted to give herself more time to prepare a ruling.

“We’ll kick out an opinion as soon as we can,” she said.

Ian Gershengorn, a lawyer for Harvard, told her that an injunction was necessary to ensure Trump’s administration could not implement his latest bid to curtail the school’s ability to host international students.

The judge scheduled the hearing after issuing a temporary restraining order on June 6, preventing the administration from implementing a proclamation that Trump had signed a day earlier. A preliminary injunction would provide longer-term relief to Harvard.

Gershengorn argued that Trump signed the proclamation to retaliate against Harvard in violation of its free speech rights under the US Constitution’s First Amendment for refusing to accede to his administration’s demands to control the school’s governance, curriculum and the ideology of its faculty and students.

“The proclamation is a plain violation of the First Amendment,” Gershengorn said.

Almost 6,800 international students attended Harvard in its most recent school year, making up about 27 per cent of the student population of the prestigious school located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. China and India are among the top countries of origin for these students.

The Trump administration has launched a multifront attack on the oldest and wealthiest US university, freezing billions of dollars in grants and other funding and proposing to end its tax-exempt status, prompting a series of legal challenges.

Harvard has filed two separate lawsuits before Burroughs seeking to unfreeze $2.5 billion in funding and to prevent Trump’s administration from blocking the ability of international students to attend the university.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on May 22 announced that her department was immediately revoking Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Programme certification, the governmental mechanism that allows it to enrol foreign students.

Her action was almost immediately blocked by Burroughs. While the Department of Homeland Security has since shifted to challenging Harvard’s certification through a lengthier administrative process, Burroughs at a May 29 hearing said she planned to issue a “broad” injunction to maintain the status quo.

A week later, though, Trump signed his proclamation, which cited national security concerns to contend that Harvard is “no longer a trustworthy steward of international student and exchange visitor programmes”.

The proclamation suspended the entry of foreign nationals to study at Harvard or participate in exchange visitor programmes for an initial period of six months and directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to consider whether to revoke visas of international students already enrolled at Harvard.

Harvard has asked Burroughs, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, to block Trump’s directive.

In court papers, the US Justice Department urged Burroughs not to lump Trump’s proclamation in with the judge’s consideration of Noem’s actions, as it did not ban existing students and Trump relied on different legal authority for his order.

Armed men killed one person and injured five others on Monday after they opened fire over non-payment of extortion in Karachi’s Surjani Town, according to the police.

West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tariq Illahi Mastoi told Dawn.com that “two suspects on a motorcycle resorted to an indiscriminate firing on a restaurant,” killing a rickshaw driver and injuring five others.

He added that the police registered a first information report (FIR) under Sections 34 (common intention), 302 (intentional murder), 324 (attempted murder), 384 (punishment for extortion) and 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) of the Pakistan Penal Code against unknown suspects and launched an investigation.

According to the FIR, the complainant, the restaurant operator, said that he had received a phone call on the restaurant’s cell number on May 30 during which the caller demanded extortion, adding that he had informed the police but did not lodge an FIR.

He said that two armed suspects on a bike resorted to firing near the restaurant today, killing one passerby and injuring five others.

After 20 minutes of the incident, the complainant said he received the cell phone call at the restaurant and the caller claimed that they had attacked the restaurant. The complainant added that the caller also threatened him with “dire consequences if the Rs3 million extortion was not paid.”

The dead body and the injured were moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said that the condition of the injured people was out of danger.

Surjani Station House Officer Mohammed Ali Shah said that the police had some clues about the identity of the attackers, adding they were working on arresting them.

Robert Kubica takes his Ferrari across the line to win the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours (Fred TANNEAU)

Former Formula One driver Robert Kubica has long since tackled the demons of a near-fatal accident 14 years ago but Sunday's victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans is arguably his greatest achievement yet.

The 40-year-old Pole roared to victory in his bright yellow "privateer" Ferrari to give the Italian marque a third consecutive win in the most famous endurance race in the world.

In a thrilling 93rd edition of the race, which saw the top four separated by just over 20 seconds going into the final 15 minutes, Kubica and his AF Corse co-drivers Philip Hanson and Ye Yifei (#83) finished just 14.084sec ahead of a Porsche (#6) driven by Kevin Estre, Matt Campbell and Laurens Vanthoor.

In so doing they knocked the two factory Ferraris, who started the race as favourites, into third and fourth.

"It's been a long 24 hours but an enjoyable one. Grazie mille, grazie a tutti," said Kubica over the team radio as he took the chequered flag.

Kubica was one of Formula One's brightest prospects when he won the 2008 Canada Grand Prix but a harrowing accident in a rally in Andorra in 2011 almost cost him his life.

Trapped upside down in his car before being freed and whisked to hospital, Kubica suffered several serious injuries and underwent a partial amputation of his right forearm.

"What happened was very unfortunate, but I was very lucky," he said after Sunday's victory.

"It took me quite a few years, not only to recover physically but also mentally.

"What happened happened and I have to accept it. One of the worst periods of my life was when my mind wouldn't accept the fact that my arm was failing."

He returned to racing cars, however, winning the WRC2 championship and taking part in sports car races. In 2017 he moved back into Formula One, testing for Renault before racing for Williams in 2019.

- 'Greatest achievement' -

But Sunday's win which made him the first Pole ever to win Le Mans tops any of his other achievements behind the wheel.

"It was quite difficult to live with, but I'm happy to have achieved my personal goals," he said.

"The best thing I've achieved in my life - it's nothing to do with racing - it's more the battle I won with my mind."

Both of Kubica's co-drivers were also first-time winners with Ye the first Chinese driver to triumph.

"I'm at a loss for words," said Ye who arrived in Le Mans at the age of 14 on an exchange programme to try and become a professional driver.

"It's going to take me some time to realise everything that's happened today. Right now I feel like I'm dreaming. Maybe in two seconds I'll wake up and none of this will exist.

"In China, the car industry has come a long way. When my father was my age, there were no cars on the roads, and we're talking about the 1990s. Becoming a professional driver was impossible."

With three of the top four, it was certainly a good day for Ferrari but there will undoubtedly be some at headquarters in Maranello who might not be so happy.

As the winning car was not entered directly by the manufacturer, but by the AF Corse team, Ferrari will not take the points for victory in the World Endurance Championship.

Cadillac locked out the front row of the grid but #12 of Will Stephens, who had taken pole, had to settle for fifth with the second car (#38), featuring former Formula One world champion Jensen Button, coming home in eighth.

Betfred Super League

Leeds (8) 36

Tries: Smith (2), Croft, Holroyd, Connor, Gannon Goals: Connor (5), Watkins

Warrington (0) 12

Tries: Thewlis, Currie Goals: Sneyd (2)

A rare brace of tries from forward Cameron Smith set Leeds Rhinos on their way to a fourth straight Super League win, piling on the misery for Challenge Cup final losers Warrington Wolves.

Smith came off the interchange bench to break down some strong Wire defence in the first half, and with the in-form Jake Connor adding the conversion and a penalty, the home side had breathing space at half-time.

The Wolves' spirited performance fell apart in the second half as Smith added another and tries from Brodie Croft, Tom Holroyd, Connor and Morgan Gannon ensured they stayed in touch with top two Hull Kingston Rovers and Wigan Warriors.

A superb try from Jake Thewlis had given Warrington brief hope, Ben Currie added a late consolation score and Marc Sneyd's two conversions saw him overhaul Andy Farrell to go fourth in the all-time Super League kickers' list with 1,027 goals.
