Colts QB Anthony Richardson's plan to rehab shoulder remains the same after second opinion

INDIANAPOLIS — Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson flew to the Los Angeles area to get a second opinion on his injured throwing shoulder from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the renowned orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery on Richardson’s sprained AC joint in 2023.

Richardson initially chose surgery on the sprained AC joint he suffered as a rookie in an effort to prevent future issues with the shoulder.

But the Colts shut down Richardson two weeks ago after the young quarterback experienced pain in his throwing shoulder, and team doctors discovered aggravation in the joint.

ElAttrache’s evaluation of Richardson’s shoulder mirrored the team doctor’s evaluation.

“No timetable on the return,” Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen said. “We’re just going to rehab, and once the doctors clear him to throw, we’ll ease him back into it.”

For Richardson, the picture did not change.

“It’s the same thing,” Steichen said.

Richardson will not practice during this week’s mandatory minicamp — the end of the team’s offseason workout period — and must rest the shoulder until doctors clear him to start throwing again.

Steichen said last week that he expects to get Richardson back at some point during camp, but he has stopped short of saying the Colts believe Richardson will be ready to go when training camp opens on July 24.

Daniel Jones, the veteran quarterback Indianapolis signed to compete with Richardson for the starting job, becomes the beneficiary, taking every snap with the starters until Richardson is ready to throw again.

“He’s going to have a lot of reps going forward,” Steichen said. “We’ll see how training camp plays out.”

Richardson, on the other hand, must try to improve by watching the Colts practice from the spot behind Jones, scanning the field and making his reads mentally.

“What he’s doing a really good job of right now, he’s standing right behind the quarterback and taking a true mental rep,” Steichen said. “He’s actually going through his reads and his eye progression, so he’s getting his mental reps that way.”

If Richardson is forced to miss the early days or weeks of camp, it’s unclear how long he’d have to be out of the lineup for the Colts to go with Jones.

Steichen has not said when he wants to name a starter at the position.

“I don’t know that,” Steichen said. “I don’t have a timetable on that yet, but once I know, I will let you guys know.”
